Who's Fueling Direct?
There is a growing ecosystem of HIEs, health IT vendors and others that are leveraging the Direct Project to support health care stakeholders. This list includes organizations that have made public announcements, as well as organizations that have made self-attestations. It's not a binding commitment by anyone listed below, nor an inducement to buy any solution. Many Direct Project participants are also active in standards organizations such as HL7, IHE, ASTM, and others.
What does it mean to be Direct?
To learn more about how to be compliant or compatible with Direct, check out the Direct Project Compliance and Compatibility Guide. (This guide is currently a work in progress and it might change until the consensus process has completed.)
In addition, at the most definitional level, Direct compliance is defined by the Applicability Statement for Secure Health Transport, which defines a core set of requirements for using SMTP, S/MIME and X.509 certificates in an interoperable way. The XDR and XDM Specification for Direct Messaging addresses the use of XDR and XDM zipped packages in email in the context of directed messaging to fulfill the key user stories of the Direct Project.
What are the best practices for a Direct implementation?
Through a stakeholder consensus process, the Direct Project has created guidance on best practices in a number of areas. Visit our Documentation Library to ensure your implementation is following best practices created by industry leaders and experts.
Okay, but how can I get it in my product?
Implementation of the Direct specifications can be accomplished by using our .NET Reference Implementation, our Java Reference Implementation, or by writing your own implementation. The diagram below shows, at a high level, the technology that is involved.
Where can I go for help?
You're not in this alone. A number of other organizations have learned valuable lessons from their experience in implementation and are able to answer questions you may have. In addition, the Direct Project wiki contains a wealth of information that may be helpful, including more information about upcoming webinars.
